Westpay is essentially a Swedish payment-technology company selling payment hardware, payment software, and payment infrastructure, with a particularly relevant position in integrated POS and self-service/unattended payments.

For the kiosk/self-service market, we’d characterize them as a payment-enablement vendor rather than a kiosk manufacturer.

They sell:

  • Payment terminals — the Carbon C10, C20, C100+ and C150 families, covering fixed/integrated and mobile applications. The C20 is specifically designed around European Accessibility Act requirements. Westpay
  • Unattended/self-service payment solutions — terminals and payment technology integrated into ordering kiosks and other customer-operated systems. Westpay specifically markets this for unattended environments. Westpay
  • SoftPOS — Westpay TAP turns compatible Android phones/PDAs into contactless payment terminals without separate payment hardware. Westpay
  • Payment software/infrastructure — gateway, integrations, transaction processing connectivity, multi-acquirer routing and payment applications. Westpay says it develops and operates much of this stack itself in Sweden/Europe. Westpay
  • Alternative payment methods — cards plus Swish, Vipps, Klarna and other methods through the same terminal/payment environment. Westpay
  • Terminal/device management — Phoenix provides fleet management, software deployment, logs, device health and related functions. Westpay
  • Payments-as-a-Service / integration services — onboarding, provisioning, integrations, terminal management, compliance and ongoing operational support. Westpay

Who buys it?

There are really two customer groups.

Merchants/operators are one. Westpay targets retail chains, restaurants/hospitality, transportation, service businesses and other organizations operating payment points. It says more than 10,000 merchants use its services. Examples it highlights include Axfood in retail and hospitality/payment deployments involving Caspeco and OpenPOS. Westpay

The second—and probably more interesting group from the KMA perspective—is technology partners and POS/self-service integrators. Westpay reports 80+ active POS partners in retail, hospitality and transport. Those companies integrate Westpay payment devices and software into their own POS, kiosk or commerce solution rather than the merchant necessarily buying a standalone Westpay product. Westpay

Their C10 description makes this particularly clear: it is designed for integration into self-service, retail and restaurant systems, and one supported integration gives developers access to Westpay’s terminal models and payment methods. Westpay

Where they fit in our terminology

We would put Westpay in your directories approximately like this:

Unattended Payments / Payment Terminals → Westpay — Sweden / Nordics / Europe

And we’ll give them secondary tags for Self-Service Kiosks, POS Integration, SoftPOS, Alternative Payments and Payment-as-a-Service.

They are somewhat comparable in market function to the payment-terminal side of Ingenico, Worldline, Verifone, PAX or Adyen, but Westpay’s pitch is notably about being an independent European payment infrastructure/provider that lets merchants and integrators retain choice of acquirer. They explicitly promote multi-acquirer support rather than locking the merchant to one acquiring relationship.
